The basic principles of an air source heat pump can be explained quickly and simply:
A fan draws in outdoor air, which then passes through a heat exchanger, causing a refrigerant in the heat pump to evaporate within the heat pump circuit, this is then brought up to a higher temperature by a compressor inside, making energy available for space heating and domestic hot water heating.
Heat pumps require electricity to operate but for every unit of electricity they use, they produce upto 5 units of heat. This figure is referred to as a COP rate.
If designed correctly these systems can operate efficiently even when the outside temperature drops down to -10degC.
